MCES Pal serves as a comprehensive interface, empowering caregivers to independently and confidently conduct sessions at the Memory Care Experience Station, thereby enhancing the quality of life for residents with dementia.

01
Context
Dementia
is not a specific disease but is rather a general term for the impaired ability to remember, think, or make decisions. Dementia can result in memory loss, communication issues, spatial difficulties, reasoning problems, and confusion. And it is not uncommon.

There’s NO CURE, improving life quality of people suffering from dementia is the best thing we can do.
There are million dementia population in the US,

million worldwide.
By 2030, estimated to increase to million worldwide.

Memory Care Experience Station (MCES)
By leveraging multiple senses, the station crafts an immersive experience that heightens joy and significantly boosts the mood and engagement of dementia residents.
Partnering with Mortati Design, our team engaged in the MCES project, previously initiated in collaboration with the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living.

For more information about the MCES, please click here.
However, the station's operation relies largely on the lead designer, greatly limiting its impact on dementia residents...
How might we empower the staff to run an experience independently so they can improve the quality of life for all the dementia residents?
Problem
Restricted impact of the MCES experience station due to dependence on the lead designer.
Opportunities
Empower staff to operate the station independently, enhancing well-being for dementia residents.
Audience
SF Campus for Jewish Living staff involved in dementia care.
Solution
Create user-friendly operation interface for staff to autonomously manage the MCES station, improving residents' quality of life.
Synthesis
Our goal was to streamline the process and promote better workflow effectiveness.
After a series of intensive research and testing sessions, we concluded 4 major pain points and opportunities.

To Address The Problem Of Operational Inefficiency, We Present
MCES PAL
INTUITIVE & ALL-IN-ONE OPERATING INTERFACE FOR THE MEMORY CARE EXPERIENCE STATION.
Enhance operational efficiency by making tasks more accessible and manageable for the staff members.
Creating an intuitive interface and clear guidelines empowers staff to work independently, reducing reliance on the lead designer and improving operational efficiency by streamlining tasks and reducing delays.

To Address The Problem Of Manual Data Management, We Designed
Centralized Accessible Data Hub
ENHANCES OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY, DATA ACCURACY, COLLABORATION, AND SECURITY.
MCES Pal acts as a central data hub, consolidating essential data (Resident Library, Video Library, and Session Notes Library), promoting universal accessibility, seamless access, collaboration, and data integrity. It also streamlines permission management, safeguarding sensitive resident data.

To Address The Problem Of Staff's Cognitive Overload, We Designed...
Cognitive Load Relief Features
STAY ORGANIZED AND ON TOP OF THEIR DUTIES WITHOUT THE ADDED MENTAL BURDEN.
1. Smart Prompts:
MCES Pal offers timely tips to assist staff in operating the station, ensuring smooth sessions and reducing the fear of missing out.
2. Digital Session Notes:
We've gone paperless for easy input, retrieval, and sharing of session notes.
3. Thoughtful Reminders:
Understanding staff's frequent multitasking, MCES Pal auto-logs pending tasks, sends reminders, and minimizes their cognitive load during station operation.

To Address The Challenge of Facilitating Family Social Interaction, We Present...
Promote Social Engagement
ENHANCING NON-STAFF MEMBER”S ABILITY TO FACILITATE MEANINGFUL SOCIAL INTERACTIONS WITH MCES.
Social interaction can significantly improve the daily lives of dementia residents. To promote more social interaction, MCES Pal offers a user-friendly Guest Mode, making it easy for family members who may not be familiar with the operation to use the station.
Considering that external individuals may not be familiar with the residents' situations, we have designed a Filtering Feature to help guests easily determine which video to play.

Impact & Potential
SUCCESS METRICS
As this is a zero-to-one project, we still need to allow some time for this interface to operate before we can measure its effectiveness. However, based on our theory, we can measure it from two perspectives:
1. Number of MCES Usage/Frequency:
If the interface is user-friendly, more people will be able to operate the machine, leading to an increase in its usage frequency.
2. Task Completion Time:
If our design is effective, staff should be able to complete operational tasks quickly.
POTENTIAL
1. Tracking Dementia Resident Progression:
Staff commonly monitor residents' status through their performance in MCES sessions, often using this data to respond to family inquiries. This aspect of MCES holds great potential.
2. Co-Creation of Content with Families:
Research highlights the effectiveness of familiar, memory-triggering content for dementia patients. Enabling family members to co-create such content could be a potent tool.
IMPACT

MCES is a powerful tool that brings delight to the dementia population. The more people can operate it, the more the dementia population can benefit. I'm grateful to be part of this zero-to-one project that amplifies its positive impact. We've successfully laid the foundation for this interface, and we're all excited to see what the next level will bring.
